sila is a generative installation that includes video, sound, glass, water, oil, and motors. The content of the work is taken from Clarke's 2012 Arctic expedition. She traveled up the coast of Greenland collecting data, images, video, field recordings and interviews with Greenlandic hunters and others. This content is presented in an immersive installation, altered through custom software and generative algorithms. The glass sculpture was developed to reference the calving ice and landscape, as well as infrastructure Clarke experienced in Greenland. As the installation is experienced over time, oil and water drips onto the glass which is held together in areas with water soluble paper. Pieces of glass fell to the floor and then rearranged to create new neo-landscapes. Video stills and images of Greenlandic life, including ice are also printed and hung in the installation.
